Note:  In July and August we only walk on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays.  Weekly walks resume in September.  Covid precautions include wearing masks and physically distancing.  We are also offering Zoom sessions at 9 am, led by Don Messersmith, on Tuesdays when we do not walk.

Our walks start at the Lakeside Commons entryway at 8 am on Tuesdays. Do bring binoculars, if you have them.  The  campus walks last about an hour.  We consider the weather and cancel walks due to unfavorable conditions, so  consult the leaders if you want to be sure the walks will happen.

At times during the year we have carpool trips to nearby places.  These start at 8 am and we return to Riderwood by 10 am.  We may also have longer trips.

Details about  walks and carpool trips are coordinated by Alan and Becky Hedin.

Don Messersmith, who has led birding trips on ALL continents, joins us frequently.  Don is extremely knowledgeable and has taught ornithology for college classes. He patiently points out both the common and uncommon birds.

 Bird Highlights from Campus  Walks

We usually see 10 – 20 species on each campus walk.  You may find the entire list at .    You may then do a search on ‘Riderwood’ and click on the date to see the entire list for the day.

Hooded Mergansers stayed by Mallard Pond near the Riderwood Resident Gardens for several weeks in the Spring of 2019 and 2020.  What a treat!

Bird House Monitoring…

Tom Adkins coordinates monitors for the 50 bird houses we have on campus.  Here’s a peak into one of the bird houses.
