Softball practice starts in the spring whenever the weather get agreeable. Our practices are atCalverton Park which is behind Calverton Elementary School. Our manager is Charlie Hudson, HG319.

We play a one-day tournament, usually early in June, with three other Erikson Communities, Oakcrest, Charleston, and Greenspring.  In the past the tournament was held at Charleston because they have a field on site.  However having only one field the winners of the first round played for the championship while the losers just sat and watched.  But this year (2013) Riderwood hosted the tournament and we had two esquisitely groomed fields at the Fairland Recreational Park on Old Gunpowder Road and so were able to play both a winners and losers second round.  Everyone seemed pleased with this arrangement and we will probably host the tournament again next year (2014).

We use the  Senior Softball USA rules with the addition of allowing the base runners to safely overrun 2nd and 3rd base as long as they don’t try to advance any further.

Riderwood Softball Team Takes Home the Trophy!

By Jeff Getek

Public Affairs Manager

On a picture-perfect late spring day, residents of Riderwood brought home the trophy in the Annual Erickson Living Resident Softball Tournament.

Team Riderwood earned a pair of hard-fought victories against sister Erickson Living retirement communities in a day of competitive, yet friendly, competition. The four-team event, a “Battle of the Beltways,” matched squads from Baltimore (Charlestown and Oak Crest) and the DC Metro area (Greenspring and Riderwood). The tournament was held on June 5 at the Fairfield Athletics and Aquatics Center in Laurel, MD.

Riderwood defeated Charlestown 12-0 in the opening game as resident Gordon Ward threw a no-hitter! In the championship game versus Greenspring, Riderwood scored five runs in the 4th inning to break open a tie game. With some great plays in the final inning, Riderwood held on to earn an 11-6 victory.

“We worked hard, practiced as a team, and everyone made a contribution, especially Gordon with the no-hitter in the first game,” described Riderwood resident Charles Hudson, who served as a coach. Team Riderwood received vocal support from residents, friends and family members who made the trip to Laurel.

2014 Season

Practices for the 1014 season will be on Monday and Wednesdays 8:30 to 10:00 with Thursday as a backup when necessary.  Practices are at the fields behind Calverton Elementary School.  To get there go out the rear exit of Riderwood and turn left on Beltsville Drive (actually you have to turn right and make a U-turn at the stop light); continue through the stop light at Calverton Blvd. and turn left on Beltsville Road.  Turn right into the parking lot just beyond Calverton Elementary School.  There are two fields and we usually practice in the far field. Our first practice is scheduled for Monday, March 30th, weather permitting. New players are more than welcome.
